Dal Khichdi

  • Rice : 1 cup
  • Tur Dal Lentils : 1 cup
  • Medium chopped Onion : 1
  • Medium chopped Tomato : 1
  • Small Ginger : 1 piece
  • Chopped Green Chilli: 1
  • Cumin Seeds : 3/4 tbsp
  • Turmeric powder : 1/4 tbsp
  • Asafoetida (Hing) : 1 tsp
  • Oil / Ghee : 1 and 1/2 tbsp



Dal Khichdi is a comforting food as it is easy to digest. It is a healthy yet tasty dish, it is light and also provides great nourishment. It is usually served with yogurt, papads and pickle or top with ghee or butter.

Rinse and wash tur dal lentils and rice together. soak both of them for 30 minutes in water.

Heat 2 tbsp ghee or oil in pressure cooker. Add cumin. When cumin splutters then add onions. Saute onions till translucent. no need to make onions light brown or golden brown. Once the onions becomes translucent, then add tomatoes, green chili and ginger. Stir and add turmeric powder and asafoetida. Saute till the tomatoes softens. Drain the rice and tur dal lentils and add them to the pressure cooker.
Stir for a minute. pour with water and season with salt. Close the lid tightly and pressure cook the khichdi on a high flame for 4-5 whistles.

Once the khichdi is cooked then top it with ghee while serving (optional). Serve Dal khichdi with curd/yogurt, Papad and accompanying salad.
